Downtown & River Market

The River Market area encompasses the location in which Kansas City was first founded. The market name comes from its large open air farmers’ market, the southern section of which was the public square in the mid 1800s. Kansas City’s downtown has the typical high rise landscape you’d expect. There are many corporations and offices, mixed with gorgeous old buildings converted into apartments or loft residences.

On the south side of downtown is an entertainment district called the Power and Light District, with restaurants, nightlife, a large arena and a smaller outdoor venue, a few shops and a nice grocery store. Just north of downtown toward the river is the River Market neighborhood. The River Market is one of the city’s original historic districts and is home to the largest farmer’s market in the city, The City Market. Here, you can embrace Kansas City’s history in renovated buildings that are over a century old. There are many apartments for rent and lofts for sale, some in converted historic buildings, but demand for housing in the River Market has led to many newly constructed residential buildings as well.
